NPAAC Functions

This page explains the functions of the National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council.

The functions of NPAAC as outlined in the Order in Council (PDF 355 KB) and the Amended Order in Council (PDF 72 KB) include providing advice to the Commonwealth, the States and the Territories on a range of accreditation issues. The matters the Council address include:

  • developing policy for accreditation of pathology laboratories
  • introducing and maintaining uniform standards of practice in pathology laboratories throughout Australia
  • adopting coordinated legislation and administrative action in providing pathology services
  • initiating, promoting and coordinating educational programs in relation to pathology laboratory practice
  • at the request of the Minister, a state or a territory Minister, provide advice about accreditation of a particular pathology laboratory
