Private Health Insurance (Benefit Requirements) Amendment 2010 (no. 1) and Private Health Insurance (Complying Product) Amendment 2010 (NO. 1)

The Private Health Insurance (Benefit Requirements) Amendment Rules 2010 (No. 1) (the Benefit Requirements Amendment Rules) and the Private Health Insurance (Complying Product) Amendment Rules 2010 (No. 1) (the Complying Product Amendment Rules) were registered with the Federal Register of Legislative Instruments (FRLI) on 19 March 2010 (FRLI No: F2010L00688 and FRLI No: F2010L00689 respectively) and took effect on 20 March 2010.

These Rules amended the Private Health Insurance (Benefit Requirements) Rules 2010 (the Benefit Requirements Rules) and the Private Health Insurance (Complying Product) Rules 2010 (the Complying Product Rules).

The Benefit Requirements Amendment Rules

Amendments have been made to Schedule 4 to increase the minimum benefits for Nursing-Home Type Patients (NHTP) in public hospitals in New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria, and to decrease the minimum benefit payable for NHTPs at private hospitals. Changes to minimum benefits payable for NHTPS are:
  • NSW from: $101.65 to $103.25;
  • Tasmania from: $109.20 to $113.65;
  • Victoria from: $101.65 to $103.65; and
  • private hospitals from: $65.60 to $63.75.

The Complying Product Amendment Rules

Amendments have been made to Part 2, Rule 8A Benefit Requirement – Nursing-Home Type Patients. The Rules increased the amount of NHTP contribution payable by patients at private hospitals and public hospitals in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. As follows:
  • NSW from $45.50 to $47.35;
  • Queensland from $45.50 to $47.35;
  • South Australia from $45.50 to $47.35;
  • Tasmania from $45.50 to $47.35;
  • Victoria from $45.50 to $47.35; and
  • private hospitals from $40.80 to $41.35.

Private Health Insurance Branch New Physical Address and Fax Number

The Department has recently moved buildings and is now located in the Sirius Building,
Furzer Street, Woden, 2606.

The Private Health Insurance Branch now only has one fax number for all correspondence. The new fax number is (02) 6289 4444.

Recently the Private Health Insurance Branch sent letters to hospitals requesting copies of new/current accreditation certificates. Could you please ensure that these certificates are now sent to the fax number mentioned above.
