Description of clinic
The clinic is located on two sites, William Street (a refurbishment of an existing building) and Wenvoe Street (extension of an existing building). The area is accessible by a Community car and Pathology collection is available next door to the GP Super Clinic. The clinic opened on 22 July 2010.
Services
Multidisciplinary care
The Devonport GP Super Clinic provides multidisciplinary, integrated services through GPs, nurses, an audiologist, an osteopath, a podiatrist and a physiotherapist.
The clinic also has a wide range of visiting specialists and other health professionals including a: urologist, neurosurgeon, spinal surgeon, musculoskeletal medicine occupational environmental medicine specialist, psychiatrist, occupational physician, endocrinologist, rheumatologist, orthopaedic surgeon, consultant physician, counsellor and a diabetic educator. There are also telehealth services to psychiatric services interstate.
Services provided include: clinics for skin cancer, asthma and diabetes; immunisations; minor procedures; suturing; hypertension; smoking cessation; wound care; women's, men's and travel health; occupational health and injury management services to industry; and on-site sessional work with local nursing homes.
Supporting the multidisciplinary approach to care, the clinic undertakes regular team meetings which involve the GPs, administration staff, allied health staff, and community health workers delivering care at the clinic.
There are also team meetings around specific health programs or initiatives which, amongst other things, indentify referral pathways between health professionals delivering this shared care approach. Top of page

- Diabetes Clinics
- Cancer Clinics and screening, including the use of a mole scanner
- Nurse-led clinics
- Healthy eating group run by a Dietician
- Well for Life (physiotherapists, dietician and occupational therapists working together to develop and deliver strength training programs)
- Fit Club – Health promotion for walking groups
- Health assessments
- 24 hour blood pressure monitoring and holter monitoring on site, minimising the need for patients to travel to Burnie and Launceston
- Four year old children’s health screening program led by the Nurse, team care with the patient’s general practitioner
- Screening activities as part of specific women’s health and men’s health services
- Regular weekly sessions by Healthy Inspirations, a weight loss organisation
- Enrolment of eligible patients in the DVA CVC Program, (Coordinated Veterans Care Program)
Insight Radiology is on-site and provides:
- Musculo-Skeletal MRI
- CT Scanning
- Ultrasounds

Health needs and priorities
When compared with nationwide data (2001 ABS Census) there is a higher incidence in Devonport of: premature deaths, particularly from cancer; circulatory system diseases; type 2 diabetes; obesity/overweight issues; mental health (psychological distress); musculoskeletal disorders; and respiratory system diseases.
Projections to 2021 are that Devonport's youth and working age population are likely to decline by up to 6.8% but its elderly population will grow substantially with those aged 65+ representing 24.3% of the Devonport population by 2021.
In response to this need, the Devonport GP Super Clinic operates with an increased focus on preventative care and provides:
- Cancer Clinics and screening
- More frequent nurse-led chronic disease management clinics for diabetes and asthma
- Mental health services including general psychology and clinical psychology
- Additional health assessments for people aged 45-49 and for people aged 75 years and older
- A visiting Orthopaedic Surgeon
- A visiting Urologist;Regular weekly sessions by Healthy Inspirations, a weight loss organisation
- 24 hour blood pressure monitoring and holter monitoring on site
- Healthy eating, Well for Life, Fit Club through the Division or other organisations Top of page

The Devonport GP Super Clinic is fully accredited with:

Operating hours
Wenvoe Street: Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 6:30pm, Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm; and William Street: Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm, Saturday 9.00am to 11.30am. After Hours support is provided through a shared roster with East Devonport Medical Centre.
Billing arrangements
The Devonport GP Super clinic provides a combination of private billing, Department of Veteran Affairs billing and Medicare bulk billing. All chronic disease management, enhanced primary care and preventative visits are bulk billed, along with follow-up visits relating to the initial consultation. There are also substantial reductions for Health Care card holders and aged or disability pensioners.
Home visits and visits to residential aged care facilities
On-site sessional work to two local nursing homes in addition to regular home visits.
Clinical training arrangements
The Devonport GP Super Clinic has relationships with General Practice Training Tasmania, University of Tasmania, Rural Clinical School & Polytechnic Academy. This has facilitated the placement of medical, nursing and allied health students and GP Registrars.
Dedicated consulting rooms for medical students are available as well as a multipurpose education room and multidisciplinary facilities.
