Description of clinic
The Gunnedah Rural Health Centre GP Super Clinic is in the grounds of the Gunnedah District Hospital and comprises five wings radiating from a central administration hub:
- 2 consulting wings (14 consulting rooms for GPs, practice nurse, allied health and visiting medical specialists)
- 1 treatment wing (3 consulting rooms, a 3 bed observation ward and 2 minor operating rooms)
- 1 education wing (4 consulting rooms, 1 large meeting room/audio-visual equipment, a library)
- a pathology wing
The clinic opened on 4 June 2012.

Services
Multidisciplinary care
The Gunnedah Rural Health Centre GP Super Clinic provides holistic patient centred care in an integrated multidisciplinary environment to allow the communities of Gunnedah and surrounds to access a wide range of medical and allied health services.
The clinic has 21 consulting rooms providing space for a range of health professionals including: GPs, GP Registrars, practice nurses, a dietitian, exercise physiologist, occupational therapists, chiropractor, psychologists, visiting medical specialties including obstetrics with antenatal care, and a geriatrician via Telehealth.
Anaesthetics and minor surgery procedures are also undertaken at the clinic.
Preventative services
Also offered are diagnostic imaging, pathology, a sleep apnoea clinic, chronic disease clinics for diabetes and asthma, adult and child health checks, mental health services, nurse-led clinics for diabetes warfarin (INR), women’s health clinics (PAP smears), excisions and referrals, and a range of services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Health needs and priorities
The Gunnedah Shire covers 4,994 square km in North West New South Wales that supports a population of 12,265 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2010). Population centres located within the municipality include: Gunnedah, Curlewis, Breeza, Carroll, Mullaley, Emerald Hill, Tambar Springs and Kelvin. 10.4% of Gunnedah Shire’s population are of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.
General Practitioners report that many patients from outside the Gunnedah Local Government Area habitually access primary health care services from the following neighbouring towns: Boggabri (39.4 km), Premer (83.9 km) and Coonabarabran (mostly obstetric patients) (105.8 km).
Key priorities for the Gunnedah community are diabetes, asthma, mental health, obesity/physical inactivity, and musculoskeletal and cardiovascular diseases.
Quality
The Gunnedah Rural Health Centre GP Super Clinic was accredited with the Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL) in April 2013.

Operating hours
Monday-Friday from 8.30am-5.00pm
By appointment Monday-Thursday 5.00pm to 8.00pm.
Pathology: Monday-Friday from 7am-5pm, Saturdays from 9am to 11am.
After Hours: All GPs are Visiting Medical Officers (VMOs) at the Gunnedah District Hospital and participate in a monthly roster on an ‘on call’ basis 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Billing arrangements
GPs and specialists: fee for service basis either with private accounts or through bulk billing.
Practice nurses: bulk billing for all services and/or clinics operated by a Registered Nurse.
Allied health: fee for service or bulk billed if eligible.
Home visits and visits to residential aged care facilities
The clinic provides a range of medical and allied health services to aged care facilities, group homes, palliative care patients and frail aged within their own home.
Clinical training arrangements
The Gunnedah Rural Health Centre GP Super Clinic provides clinical placements for medical, nursing and allied health students.
The design of the clinic encourages the integration of training through the multidisciplinary consulting rooms and procedural areas in the clinical wings.
The education wing provides dedicated teaching rooms, a library, video conferencing and a staff amenities area. Top of page
