The PHCRED Strategy was established in 2000 as a long term capacity building program to build the primary health care research capacity and evidence base.

In phase three (2010–2014), the aim is to build and communicate an evidence base to support decision making around primary health care with a focus on:

• Improving access and reducing inequity
• Better management of chronic conditions
• Increasing the focus on prevention and
• Improving quality, safety, performance and accountability

The two key organisations funded under the PHCRED Strategy, the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI) and the Primary Health Care Research and Information Service (PHCRIS), work to respectively lead primary health care research and ensure its dissemination and knowledge exchange. APHCRI also funds and facilitates research through nine centres of research excellence and works to build the capacity of the primary health care research sector.
