Improving the Quality of Molecular Genetics Testing and Reporting

The project was funded to develop quality assurance processes to improve the quality of genetic testing in Australian laboratories. This included the establishment of external quality assessments to evaluate the diagnostic performance for emerging new tests; an expansion of external quality assurance (EQA) exercises to assess the capability and performance of laboratories; establishment of a sample exchange for rare conditions or infrequently tested markers that have insufficient laboratory participation to warrant development of a formal EQA program; and to evaluate the usefulness of massively parallel-sequencing.

The outcomes of this project are to assist in the standardisation of genetic testing and to introduce more rigorous quality assurance processes to ensure the effectiveness and accuracy of genetic testing.
