What is Fraud?Fraud against the Commonwealth is defined as: “Dishonestly obtaining a benefit, or causing a loss, by deception or other means”.
Examples of potential fraud include:
- Theft of departmental money, property or assets
- Misuse of departmental credit cards, equipment or facilities
- Making, or using, false, forged or falsified documents
- Wrongfully using departmental information or intellectual property
- Misuse of departmental grant funding
- Providing false or misleading information to the Department

All reports of suspected fraud will be assessed and investigated in accordance with the Commonwealth Fraud Control Framework.
Information received from members of the public is treated sensitively and confidentially. While it is not required that contact details are provided with reports, to do so will greatly assist in gathering additional information to conduct the assessment and any subsequent investigation. Only limited feedback on a report can be provided to individuals due to privacy restrictions and the ongoing management of any investigation.
