In response to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian Government, in collaboration with the GP Colleges, has temporarily revised the RPGP eligibility arrangements to support rural GPs during the period of social distancing and movement restrictions. These arrangements will provide additional flexibility so that rural procedural GPs can continue to access support for undertaking CPD activities during this period.
Until 31 December 2020, certain CPD activities delivered online will be eligible for RPGP support. In addition, from 1 July 2020, additional grant support will be available for GPs practising emergency medicine to undertake emergency mental health CPD under reforms to the program.
An Addendum to the current guidelines has been developed as well as some Frequently Asked Questions. For further information regarding the revised eligibility criteria:

Support is provided in the form of grant payments which are designed to assist with the cost of attending training, including course costs, locum relief and travel expenses. Grants are calculated on the number of days of training.
The Program has two components. It provides support for:
- procedural GPs practising in surgery, anaesthetics and/or obstetrics in the Australian Standard Geographical Classification – Remoteness Area (ASGC-RA) 1*-5 localities; and
- GPs practising emergency medicine in ASGC-RA 2-5 localities.
Note:*Procedural GPs in ASGC-RA 1 localities are subject to specific eligibility criteria.
The Rural Procedural Grants Program is jointly administered by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners on behalf of the Department.
